It’s that time of year, fall is here and it is a favorite season for many! Cooler weather, cardigans, lazy mornings spent in front of a roaring fire, boots, and pumpkin spice creamer are making their way out. Along with fall also comes the great pumpkin spice debate…team pumpkin spice or not is the question.  Similar to capers, sushi, or pineapple on your pizza, you either love it or hate it, there isn’t an in-between! No one can convenience you to like pumpkin spice.  Some wait all year for their favorite fall drink and others gag at the thought.  This is not for the former! There are a few ways to get your pumpkin spice fix in. Some make daily runs to their local coffee shop, others stock up on their favorite store-bought items, or you can make your own pumpkin spice creamer. This cuts out the middle man, involves no daily driving, and allows you to get your fix more than once a day.

Little known fact, pumpkin spice has been around for over 3,500 years. A relatively simple combination of spices of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and sometimes allspice, have created a nostalgic smell that most quickly identify with fall. In the past couple of decades, pumpkin spice has become a staple in our culture as the seasons change, summer ends, kids go back to school and Starbucks rolls out their iconic Pumpkin Spice Latte. Stores line up pumpkin spice items starting in September, some new questionable items, and the tried and true favorites pumpkin spice lovers enjoy. Each year there are more and more pumpkin spice items to chose from so those pumpkin spice fans get as much of their fix in as possible during this short-lived time. With over half a billion dollars in sales from said pumpkin items each year, there is no doubt that there are more pumpkin spice fans than not.

A daily pumpkin spice coffee habit can cost anywhere from $3-$5 a day. Store-bought creamer is an alternative for those who want it first thing at a more economical price tag and without having to get in their car every morning. But, not everyone wants the extra additives in either option and search elsewhere to get their fix. This is where a homemade pumpkin spice creamer comes in. Not only it is easy to make, you probably have all of the ingredients in your house already! Plus, it is a healthier version with less sugar, preservatives, and possibly calories to make your own. Now, the only problem is not overindulging in pumpkin spice creamer daily.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Creamer Recipe

Here is a super simple, easy, and delicious homemade pumpkin spice creamer. This recipe is super basic and straight forward and does not require carving and pureeing pumpkin. There are a bunch of variations and notes down below to make it dairy and vegan free, sugar free, less sweet etc.

  • 2 Cups of half and half
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of sugar (depending on how sweet you wish to have your pumpkin spice creamer)
  • 2 Teaspoons of Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons of Vanilla Extract

Combine all ingredients in a glass bottle or jar with a secure lid and blend using a handheld frother or shake vigorously. Store in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. The pumpkin spice creamer will need to be shaken before each use as the spices might settle to the bottom. You can add to hot coffee as you would any creamer, just make sure you shake the creamer first. Or steam the pumpkin spice creamer with an espresso machine and use it in place of steamed milk for a pumpkin spice latte (make sure you clean very well after!). Or top your afternoon cold brew with a little pumpkin spice creamer, for an afternoon fall treat. Sprinkle your coffee beverage of choice with a little pumpkin spice and enjoy!

You can use milk with a lower fat content, such as 2% or non-fat milk if you prefer. Half and half will provide a creamier feel similar to a store-bought option or the rich flavor that a coffee shop treat provides.

For a non-dairy option, you can easily make this a non-dairy creamer by substituting half and half for your favorite non-dairy milk. Almond or oat milk are the best alternatives for this recipe, make sure you mix it up even more with the dairy-free milk options.

If you prefer you can use stevia, honey, or even maple syrup instead of regular sugar for a sugar-free, less sweet, and healthier option. For a slightly sweeter and more rich flavor pumpkin spice creamer, you can use brown sugar instead of white sugar.

Now that you have the easy pumpkin spice creamer recipe at your fingertips, you won’t have to make daily trips to your local coffee shop.
