As of Monday, February 21, total loss of life has surpassed 500,000 deaths (500,071 to be exact). We want to get our children back into schools, get back to work, and go on with our lives as if nothing ever changed. However, we can\u2019t do that. Everything changed, because when we say we want to get back to normal, what does \u201cnormal\u201d mean? As one example, let\u2019s examine families with children. In January of 2020, before COVID-19 cases were identified in the United States, there were 30.1 million male and 29.1 million female workers (age 18 to 55) who had at least one child in their households. Once the pandemic hit, the shutdown quickly followed. Places of business closed. Schools closed. People lost their jobs, businesses closed, and paying for childcare became a luxury that parents either could not afford or did not want to risk. Besides, for many families, the cost of child care versus the income of one household adult did not yield enough to make it worth it. We all know the rest of the story, and by the following October, there were 2.2 million fewer women working. <\/p>\n<p>For many of these families, women have taken on the burden of running the household and raising the children while their partners \u201cbrought home the bacon\u201d, so to speak. While this was the cat\u2019s meow for Mrs. Cleaver, in 2019, 57.4% of the labor force was made up of women. What does this mean for women\u2019s rights? One year later the number of women in the workforce has dropped to a 33-year low, and that\u2019s just in the United States, where women are (for the most part) treated equally. <\/p>\n<p>As for the rest of the world? It\u2019s easier for us to listen to what it sounds like on an actual alien planet than it is to convince change-makers to acknowledge the root cause of why the brunt of this pandemic was felt by women here on our own [planet].  <\/p>\n<p>Therein lies the rub. There\u2019s the problem when it comes to women\u2019s rights. Our culture and society want the <em>easy<\/em>, the <em>fun<\/em>, the <em>exciting<\/em>. We want to lie back and switch between the Perseverance Twitter feed (no, I\u2019m not kidding) and TikTok rather than do an actual Google search to understand that women make $0.81 to a man\u2019s dollar. <\/p>\n<p>Truth and progress are \u201cslow work\u201d. What I can tell you for certain is that finding the solution to any social injustice costs pride and money. One example of this can be seen in one of the great steps toward social unification and healing in the 20th Century: The Civil Rights Act. <\/p>\n<p>In 1964, when Congress passed the Civil Rights Act, racial discrimination was outlawed in public schools. The 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act provided federal funding to schools. The combination of these two Acts created some serious leverage: School districts that didn\u2019t desegregate would not be receiving federal funds. School leaders swallowed their pride, or at least choked it down, and took the money. This resulted in Black students\u2019 test scores rising while white students\u2019 scores maintained.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"803\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/dailymom.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Women-VS-The-Pandemic.png\" data-pin-description=\"\" data-pin-title=\"\" data-pin-id=\"\" src=\"denied:data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZpZXdCb3g9IjAgMCAxMjgwIDg1NyIgd2lkdGg9IjEyODAiIGhlaWdodD0iODU3IiBkYXRhLXU9Imh0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGZGFpbHltb20uY29tJTJGcG9ydGFsJTJGd3AtY29udGVudCUyRnVwbG9hZHMlMkYyMDIxJTJGMDIlMkZwcmVzaWRlbnQtNjMyMTlfMTI4MC5qcGciIGRhdGEtdz0iMTI4MCIgZGF0YS1oPSI4NTciIGRhdGEtYmlwPSIiPjwvc3ZnPg==\" data-spai=\"1\" alt=\"Daily Mom Parent Portal Women's Rights\" class=\"wp-image-235747\" title=\"Women's Rights VS The Global Pandemic 6 Daily Mom Parents Portal\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Pride and money are the foundation of the great divide between \u201cus and them\u201d. The combination of pride and money prevent growth, and that is because growth and change mean that the people you\u2019re oppressing with your systemic injustices, whether intentional or not, are going to be liberated and empowered and you\u2019ll lose some of your pride, perhaps a bit of your money, or heaven forbid-both.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean all hope is lost, for example, the new Walmart CEO has increased wages, broadened training, and even offers educational opportunities to the associates. One small step for man, but we have a long way to go. According to a September 2020 report, \u201cof Walmart\u2019s 2.1 million workers globally, women represent 55.7% of the non-management workforce; 44.8% of management; and 30.8% of officers from vice presidents up to the president.\u201d He believes that it is time to reinvent capitalism. <\/p>\n<p>How will this help advance girl\u2019s and women\u2019s rights, especially after the pandemic has set the progress of women in the workforce back to 1987? <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center\">Time To See<\/h3>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"857\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/dailymom.com\/portal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Women-VS-The-Pandemic.png\" data-pin-description=\"\" data-pin-title=\"\" data-pin-id=\"\" src=\"denied:data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZpZXdCb3g9IjAgMCAyMDQ4IDE0NjMiIHdpZHRoPSIyMDQ4IiBoZWlnaHQ9IjE0NjMiIGRhdGEtdT0iaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZkYWlseW1vbS5jb20lMkZwb3J0YWwlMkZ3cC1jb250ZW50JTJGdXBsb2FkcyUyRjIwMjElMkYwMiUyRnBleGVscy1yZnN0dWRpby0zODExOTc3LTIwNDh4MTQ2My5qcGciIGRhdGEtdz0iMjA0OCIgZGF0YS1oPSIxNDYzIiBkYXRhLWJpcD0iIj48L3N2Zz4=\" data-spai=\"1\" alt=\"Daily Mom Parent Portal Women's Rights\" class=\"wp-image-235754\" title=\"Women's Rights VS The Global Pandemic 7 Daily Mom Parents Portal\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Throughout this pandemic, we\u2019ve all heard the saying <em><strong>\u201cWe\u2019re all in this together\u201d<\/strong><\/em>. While we might be in this together, we\u2019re definitely not experiencing the same things. If we\u2019re all in this together, it\u2019s time for all of us to step up. How have they experienced the transformation of women\u2019s rights in their own lives? If we\u2019re all in this together, then let\u2019s work on this problem <em>together.<\/em> Some women have been lucky enough to maintain their jobs this year. Some women live in healthy homes with thriving relationships.
